Is HFH Radiology an "academic" or "community" program?
It is not, strictly speaking, an "academic" institution
in the traditional sense of being attached to a university and medical
school, but neither is it what people mean when they speak of a "community"
hospital that performs little research and sees a limited patient
population. Henry Ford Hospital is a large teaching hospital with a full
complement of residents in every specialty.
What kind of patients do you see?
As a tertiary level care center near downtown Detroit,
HFH cares for a variety of patients, including major trauma victims,
indigent populations, professional sports team members, auto workers, and
others.
How many CT and MR scanners do you have?
We have 9 CT scanners and 6 MRI scanners.
CT
Three 64 slice
One 16 slice
Four 4 slice (4 and 16 slice scanners slated to be replaced with 64 slice)
One Interventional CT scanner with CT fluoroscopy
MR
One 3T
Four 1.5T
One open 1.0T
Will I see enough cases?
One thing HFH does not lack is studies. You will see everything you have to
and more.
When do I start call?
No earlier than nine months after you start your residency.
How many residents do you take per year?
We accept nine categorical residents per year.
How does the transitional year work?
Like this
Do you have a PACS? Are you filmless?
We installed Stentor iSite PACS system in 2002; PowerScribe voice
recognition and IDX ImageCast workflow management systems were installed
shortly thereafter. We are mostly filmless now. A few small satellites
still use conventional radiography that gets scanned into the PACS.
Mammography is currently a mix between digital and film.
Can I go to AFIP?
Yes. All of our residents attend AFIP, and your housing is paid for.
Where do residents live?
All over the Metro Detroit area. Favorite cities include Royal Oak,
Southfield, Dearborn, Troy, Canton, Livonia, Northville, Farmington Hills,
and Novi just to name a few. There is a housing complex on campus that costs
approximately $700/month and has been a great option for the pre-radiology
residents. However, many people with families live in the suburbs.
Can I do research?
One research project is required for graduation. The department will support
you with the resources and finances to get your project to the major
conferences around the country (and possibly even overseas). HFH Radiology
Department has a long history of contributing to Academic Radiology with
representation at major annual radiological society meetings including the
AARS and RSNA Current and former staff and chairs are well renowned in their
respective fields.
How do you like living in the Metro Detroit area?
It was once a rule that the closer you get to the workplace, the more dreary
the city appears. However, there have been major strides recently in the
revitalization of the downtown area since Detroit has been the host of
several major sporting events recently. As always there are many cultural,
musical, culinary, and artistic activities to keep you busy during your stay
in Detroit.
Are there didactic lectures?
Yes. See the web page on the tour for more info.
